CATHRINE s. KELTON, LPC-S
I am Cathrine S. Kelton, (Cathy) and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor.
Raised in a career Air Force family, I graduated from high school in Maryland, and chose Angelo State University in San Angelo, Texas, for my college work. I graduated with a BS in Psychology, Special Education, and Education with the intent of getting my upper-level degree in Psychology. Thirty-five years later, I graduated from University of Texas, Permian Basin with a M.Ed. in Counseling.
After working for a short period of time as a high school guidance counselor, I completed the additional work to become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Texas. The 35-year interim between my degrees was instrumental in preparing me to be a LPC. As a military “brat”, I was exposed to a variety of people and cultures as we transferred around the world. The gap between my bachelor’s and my master’s degrees gave me life experiences that shaped the way I counsel and my perspective on the experiences my clients share with me.
During that time, I learned the trials of budgeting on a single-household income, the challenges of homeschooling my three children for seventeen years, and the rewards of establishing a teaching co-op for homeschooled high school students which is still functioning twenty-six years later. My nine grandchildren continue to keep me on my toes and attempt to keep me up on the current fads and fashions.
Through my training and experience, I have worked with many different mental health situations including bipolar disorder, grief, anxiety and depression. I have worked with clients with trauma and PTSD and co-morbid conditions. I have worked with adults and children with high functioning autism spectrum disorder, learning disabilities, and sensory issues which affect the individuals’ functioning. Since much of my associate internship was with a community hospice and children’s grief center, I have proficiency and sensitivity in helping individuals through difficulty experiences. After having my own independent practice for a number of years, I am currently counseling at Mahaffey Family Medicine. I enjoy the collaboration and support of working within a group of strong, talented practitioners.
